APRIL 2017- we had a successful first PITTSTON HISTORY DAY held at the Pittston Fire company. Several displays of artifacts and interesting memorabilia from GPHS and other organizations and individuals were part of the displays. Thanks for everyone’s positive feedback on the event, we hope to try and do this annually!

January 19th, 2017 “For The Least of Them” Play  –

King’s College Burke Auditorium, McGowan Business School (133 No. River Street, Wilkes-Barre)  hosted the Annual Msgr. John J. Curran Event: “For the Least of Them,”. This was a one-act, one-person play about the life of and times of Msgr. J.J. Curran, known as “the labor priest” because of his association with anthracite mine workers. The play was written by Ken Gordon and acted by Billie Herbert, Introduction by Robert Wolensky, It was provided FREE and open to the PUBLIC.

January  25, “Oral History in Northeastern Pennsylvania: Purposes and Projects”  –
Discussants were Lucia Daley, Ron Faraday, Melissa Meade, Noreen O’Connor, F. Charles Petrillo, Mary Policare, Robert Wolensky.

The event was held at the McGowan Room of the Main Library at Misericordia University. This event was also free and open to the public.

January  28, “Pittston-area Mining Disasters: Knight Shaft (1871), Eagle Shaft (1871), Twin Shaft (1896), and Knox (1959)” –

A round table discussion on the topic took place at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church basement, 35 Williams St., Pittston.

February 23, 2017***    WVIA aired  “Our Town”episode of Pittston February 23, 2017. Volunteers were answering phones for donations and info on getting copies of the segment. If you’d like to purchase your copy of the segment we do have DVD;s for sale. Just email us at GreaterPittstonHistory@gmail.com

2016 PAST EVENTS 

November 3 & 10 OUR TOWN-PITTSTON Meeting – THANK YOU to everyone who joined us on Nov. 3 & 10th at the Pittston Library. Attendance was wonderful and we showed WVIA how proud we are of Pittston!

August 18-21 Pittston Tomato Festival –  ‘ Sauce Wars’ – Patrons were able to taste 5 sauces for a fee and then vote for their favorite.  GPHS was honored to be chosen by the Tomato Festival committee to reap the benefits of this fantastic way to raise funds. The station was manned by volunteers from our organization.  THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO CAME OUT AND PARTICIPATED! IT WAS A GREAT SUCCESS!! We appreciate all the support!

July 9 (Saturday) 3 pm Gravity railroad presentation with Sal Mecca The presentation was on the Pennsylvania Coal Company’s Gravity Railroad which stretched from Port Griffith to Hawley, PA ! The Gravity was used to transport anthracite coal to the canal system prior to locomotive train service in the Wyoming Valley. WE were able to get a good crowd in the community room at the Pittston Memorial Library. Thank you to all who came out. It truly was a fascinating presentation!

May 21 ( Saturday) Historic Artifacts display at JK Holly’s (48 S. Main St. Pittston) 10 am – 6 pm The Greater Pittston Historical Society, the Dial Rock Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Frances Dorrance Chapter of the Society for Pennsylvania Archaeology did a public display of many interesting historical artifacts from ancient items found on archaeological digs to more recent history that invoked memories of nostalgia. We had several people visit with members from all 3 organizations, some even sat down to have tea with some GPHS members.  Thank you to all who joined us!

April 1 & 15 -THANK YOU to everyone who joined us at Karma yoga,  hosted by Home Yoga & Barre (5 Luzerne Ave West Pittston). It was a great fund raising success !

January 16 ( Saturday) 7pm, at Pittston Memorial Library Conference center   The Greater Pittston Historical Society hosted a presentation given by Mr. Craig Robertson. It was a very successful & informative night. Thank you to everyone who came out to the presentation!
