Another interesting article from Mr. McCarthy on how early settlers crossed the river, beginning in the 1780’s. The article continues through the colonial period and then into the early twentieth century.
We really need to show thanks to Mr. Tom Weeks for spending months organizing, laying out, and scanning hundreds of notes and articles from the Charles McCarthy Collection.
Mr. McCarthy was meticulously organized, but in the days long before cell phones and computers, would jot down notes on basically anything within reach – paper towels, cocktail napkins, match packs, you name it. And then save it!
