1973 Block #Party In Oregon Section (Tompkins Street) #Pittston

1973 – Life may have been harder, but having fun seemed to be so much easier. Below is a very well documented block party in the Oregon Section (Tompkins Street) of Pittston. The front page article of the September 2, 1973 Sunday Dispatch read:

“Residents of the 100 block of Tompkins Street in the Oregon Section of Pittston got together Saturday night and had themselves a real old-fashioned block party. Inspired by a suggestion of one of the neighbors, Anthony Balbo, about 20 families joined hands and each brought refreshments and food for themselves, contributed to a central fund and hired a band and received permission from Pittston City officials to rope off the one block in which they live.

The results were fabulous. The fifty or more people enjoyed a genuine old-fashioned night of fun and frolic with their neighbors sharing in good food, fellowship and dancing in the streets. A pretty good American way to spend a hot night on the last weekend of the summer.

Mr. Balbo was chairman of the event assisted by Mrs. Dorothy Masslar and Mrs. Margaret Casper. Joe Amico was in charge of entertainment.”

We hope many are still around and get to enjoy this post.
